FAQ

Entering a nursing facility is often a difficult decision for residents and family members. It has been our experience that people often lack information and share similar concerns about nursing home placement. We hope you will find the following list of questions and answers helpful.

May my personal physician continue to treat me once I become a resident at Dawson?

Upon admission, you may elect to have your personal physician manage your care or be assigned to a physician from our group. Dawson has formed strategic alliances with qualified physicians from some of the finest medical centers in Chicago to offer familiar and respected choices of physicians and hospitals.

What are the visiting hours at Dawson? Is there an age restriction for children?
Visiting hours are 10am through 8pm daily. You may arrange a visit outside of normal hours with administrative approval. We request that you receive visitors under the age of two in designated areas.

Are residents allowed to spend the weekend with relatives or spend the night out of the facility?
Our residents often visit with family members outside of the facility during the day for outings as well as overnight stays.

Are there telephones in the room?
If you desire a private telephone in your room, we will assist you in making arrangements with Ameritech. The telephone service provider will bill you directly for installation cost and monthly charges. Public telephones are located in the hallway on each floor.

May I bring medicine from home?
All medications you receive must be ordered by your attending physician and provided by our contracted pharmacy. State regulations mandate that our nurses give you medications and prohibit you from keeping any medications in your room. This includes ordinary over the counter drugs such as aspirin, milk of magnesia or even rubbing alcohol.

How much clothing should I bring?
Clothing should be comfortable and machine washable. At least five change of clothing and two pairs of non-slip shoes are recommended for most people.

Can I bring electrical appliances or furniture from home?
Some electrical appliances are acceptable such as, portable televisions and radios. Our bedrooms are fully furnished though we encourage our residents to bring small personal items that might brighten their room and make them feel at home, such as, plants, photographs or a comfortable chair.

What is the nurse to resident ratio?
The average nurse to resident ratio is 1 to 8 during the day shift, 1 to 10 during the evening shift and 1 to 15 during the night shift.

Does Medicare pay for nursing home care?
Medicare Part "A" coverage helps pay for a portion of skilled nursing care for up to 100 days after at least a 3 day qualifying hospital stay. Medicare will pay all of the covered services for the first 20 days. During the last 80 days, the recipient is required to pay a daily co-insurance charge, and Medicare will pay the balance. Although, the maximum Medicare benefit for a nursing home stay is 100 days, each resident's coverage will vary based on individual medical conditions.

What is the daily rate at Dawson? What is included in the services I pay for?
Our daily current rates are $150.00 for a private room, $125.00 for a semi-private room, and $110.00 for a 4-bed room. Our daily rate includes the following services: all staff, supervision, room, board, meals, nutritional supplements, laundry, personal care items, general health care equipment and supplies.
